Alabama names Keelon Russell starting QB over Austin Mack

TLDR: The five-star sophomore beat out Austin Mack in fall camp and will be Kalen DeBoer's QB1 when Alabama opens its 2026 season.
It's official: Keelon Russell is QB1 in Tuscaloosa. Pete Thamel broke the news that Alabama has named Russell its starting quarterback after he won the job over Austin Mack in fall camp, ending a competition that stretched all the way back to spring ball.

Sources: Alabama has named Keelon Russell the team’s starting quarterback. He won the job on camp over Austin Mack.
This wasn't a coin flip. Russell, Alabama's highest-rated quarterback signee ever, threw for 143 yards and 2 touchdowns on 11-of-15 passing in limited action as a true freshman last season and picked up offensive player-of-the-week honors for his showing against Eastern Illinois. Mack, a Washington transfer in his third year with the program, had been Ty Simpson's primary backup in 2025 and was widely seen as the more experienced, steadier option. Russell won anyway — on upside, dual-threat ability, and the kind of camp buzz that separates a guy from the pack.
QBs coach Bryan Ellis didn't dance around why. Speaking to the school's NIL entity Yea Alabama, Ellis said the decision came down to Russell's playmaking: "Keelon is gonna be the starting quarterback here because he's a playmaker. He's the guy that we know when the ball is in his hands, a lot of good shit can happen."

Russell's path here is a good story on its own. He was a 3-star committed to SMU at one point, then flipped to Alabama, won Elite 11 MVP, took home Gatorade National Player of the Year, and finished as a Five-Star Plus+ prospect. That's about as steep a recruiting climb as you'll see, and now it ends with the keys to Kalen DeBoer's offense.

The timing lines up with what DeBoer reportedly wanted all along. Thamel noted the decision fits the coach's preferred timeline, with 2 weeks of practice left before the opener for Russell to run as the No. 1 and for the staff to build out packages that lean into his dual-threat ability — something the pocket-passer era under Ty Simpson didn't really showcase.
For Alabama, this is the biggest quarterback bet DeBoer has made since taking over the program. Russell gives the Tide a different kind of weapon under center, and with 2 weeks to install those packages before kickoff, all eyes turn to how much of his game actually makes it onto the field in Week 1.
