The Panthers' quarterback room has been a soap opera for going on three years now, and Thursday night in Canton gives us the first real look at chapter two. Kenny Pickett signed a one-year deal with Carolina this offseason to learn under Dave Canales and battle for the backup job, and now he's getting the ball first.
Adam Schefter's report matched what was already buzzing out of Panthers camp: Pickett gets the Hall of Fame Game start against the Cardinals, with Bryce Young sitting the exhibition entirely. That's standard practice for a locked-in starter this early in preseason, but it also hands Pickett a clean runway to make a first impression in a Carolina uniform.
There's a funny bit of history here too. Pickett and Young shared a Heisman ceremony stage back in 2021, when Young took home the trophy and Pickett finished third. Four years later they're QB1 and QB2 on the same depth chart, with Pickett trying to resuscitate a career that never quite took off in Pittsburgh.
The stakes for Thursday shouldn't be overblown, no starters typically play meaningful snaps in the Hall of Fame Game, and Canales himself has been noncommittal about how long Pickett will even stay in. Haynes King is set to back him up once Pickett comes out.
Still, in a QB room that's been picked apart for depth all offseason, every rep matters. Pickett taking the first snaps of the preseason is a low-stakes, high-signal moment, a chance to show Canales and the front office he's more than just a camp arm while Young locks down the job he's not losing anytime soon.
