The bigger story sitting on top of the result: Cherie DeVaux became the first female trainer ever to win the Kentucky Derby. The shot of her watching the closing yards is the kind of moment that's going to live in Derby montages forever, and Kayce Smith was right to flag it the second it hit the timeline.
On the other side of the euphoria you had Portnoy, who had been all-in on Renegade for Repole Stable. Per Dave, Renegade got demolished out of the gate and then somehow looked like he was going to recover and win the whole thing before getting run down. Repole, as Dave put it, may just be cursed in this race. Big Cat had his own version of the same nightmare — he trusted Randy Moss's pick on Chief Wallabee and was ready to set fire to the ticket.
And of course there was a superfecta. There's always a superfecta.
