The Klay Thompson sweepstakes just got another entrant, and it's a loud one. Per Marc Stein's latest reporting, the Miami Heat aren't just interested in the 4-time champion — they're 'desperate' for him, according to a report relayed by Legion Hoops.
Desperate is a strong word for an NBA front office to have attached to it, but it tracks. Miami's roster is built around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, and neither of those guys is confused for a knockdown 3-point shooter. Thompson, even at 36 and coming off a down year shooting-wise, is still the kind of name that makes defenses honest off the ball.
The catch is that Thompson isn't a free agent right now — he's still under contract with the Dallas Mavericks, owed roughly $17.5 million in the final year of his deal. For Miami to get him, Dallas would need to either buy him out or work out a trade, and reporting out of Dallas suggests the Mavericks have been resistant to a buyout specifically because they know how many teams, Miami and the Lakers among them, would be circling if Thompson hit the open market.
That's the wrinkle that makes this more complicated than a simple 'Heat want Klay' headline. Dallas has maintained since June that it would rather trade Thompson than release him outright, and there's no obvious trade framework connecting Miami and Dallas that's surfaced publicly. So 'desperate' might be the operative word — Miami wants in, but wanting isn't the same as having a path.
Adding to the noise, Thompson has reportedly been in direct contact with new Mavericks president Masai Ujiri this offseason, and he's also been tied to a potential homecoming with the Lakers, where he spent part of his childhood. Miami is very much in the mix, but it's not the only team with its hand up.
For now, this is a market to watch rather than a deal to bank on. If Dallas budges on a buyout, expect Miami's reported desperation to turn into an actual pursuit — and fast.
