Charlotte was always going to be heavy. The 600 is the longest day on the NASCAR calendar in a normal year, and this was very much not a normal year. Busch's family was in the building, the garage was draped in 8s and Rowdy gear, and you could feel the weight of it before a single engine fired.

Pre-race, the speedway held a moment of silence with Busch's wife and kids standing trackside. There is no version of that scene that isn't brutal, and watching Samantha and the boys try to hold it together while 100,000 people went quiet around them was about as hard as it gets in this sport.

And then came the moment that broke the internet. Kyle Larson's son walked over to Brexton's buddy, Kyle Busch's son, and just hugged him. No cameras prompted it, no PR handler set it up. One racing kid seeing another racing kid having the worst day of his life and going to do something about it. NASCAR is a family sport in ways that other leagues aren't, and that clip is the whole thesis statement.

Dale Jr., who has been the de facto spokesman of this sport through every hard moment of the last 25 years, eventually said what everybody needed somebody to say. His tribute hit because he knew Rowdy as a competitor, a teammate's headache, a rival, and a friend, and he didn't try to clean any of it up. Two-time champ. Most wins in Cup history. A pain in the ass on a short track and an even bigger pain in the ass to put away when he smelled a win. That's the guy NASCAR is mourning.

Rest in peace, Rowdy. The 8 in the grass, the kid walking across pit road, Junior on camera trying to keep it together — it all hits the same. NASCAR lost one of the greatest to ever do it, and Charlotte made damn sure he got the sendoff he earned.
