Georgia Tech captain Kyle Efford medically retires

TLDR: Georgia Tech linebacker Kyle Efford has medically retired after a pile-up of injuries, ending a career with 250 tackles in which he led the Yellow Jackets in tackles 3 straight seasons.

The news broke Tuesday afternoon, and the reaction around college football was mostly people wishing a good player well.

Georgia Tech's release says the decision came from an accumulation of injuries over his career. The last straw was the surgically repaired shoulder, which he hurt again against Tennessee. That holds him to 3 games and 169 defensive snaps in his 5th year, and he still managed 27 tackles in that time. That's 9 a game, including a career-high-tying 13 in the opener vs. Colorado and 6 more in the 28-25 win over Duke. Even playing hurt, he was the guy making plays in the middle of that defense.

The career numbers are what make this sting. Efford finishes with 250 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and an interception across 43 games and 33 starts. He led Georgia Tech in tackles in 2023, 2024 and 2025, the first Yellow Jacket in 24 years to do it 3 seasons running. In 2023 he was the first freshman to lead the team outright since 1999. He was a captain in 2024 and again this year, made third-team All-ACC in 2024 and honorable mention in 2025, and finished his business degree last December.

Look at how he's leaving, too. Efford isn't going anywhere. The school says he'll stay with the team for the rest of 2026 as a captain and player-coach. It's a good look for a program built on guys like him, and you have to figure Brent Key's staff wanted his voice in that linebacker room more than anybody's.

For the defense, this mostly locks in what has been the reality since the Tennessee game. Georgia Tech has already been playing without its best linebacker, and the hope of getting him back for the stretch run is officially gone. Whoever has been filling in now owns the job, and the defense has to keep stopping people in conference play without the guy who's been its center for 3 years.

Football is brutal sometimes. Efford did everything right: produced from day 1, got his degree, wore the C twice. His body just didn't let him finish it on the field. Best of luck to him in whatever comes next, and it sounds like that might include a whistle and a headset.
