Vikings name Kyler Murray starter over JJ McCarthy

The Vikings finally ended their offseason quarterback soap opera. Adam Schefter broke it first: Kyler Murray is Minnesota's starting quarterback, with Kevin O'Connell personally informing the team.

Murray's path to this job is bizarre on its own. Arizona released him in March rather than pay a $19.5 million guarantee, and he landed in Minnesota on a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum, with the Cardinals still footing most of his 2026 salary. Schefter noted the contract also carries a no-tag clause, meaning Murray can walk into unrestricted free agency next spring no matter how this season goes. He's the Vikings' 4th different Week 1 starter in 4 years, following Kirk Cousins, Sam Darnold and McCarthy himself.

GM Nolan Teasley made the football case for the swap, framing it around scheme fit rather than a referendum on McCarthy. Speaking on SiriusXM, he pointed to Minnesota's wide-zone system as the reason Murray's legs make him the better bet right now.

That's a real shift for a guy Minnesota drafted 10th overall in 2024 to be the long-term answer. McCarthy missed his entire rookie year with a torn meniscus, then battled a high ankle sprain, concussion symptoms and a hand fracture through a 2025 season that still saw the Vikings go 6-4 in his 10 starts. O'Connell has been careful to frame the demotion as circumstantial, not a verdict on the kid's ceiling, telling reporters McCarthy has shown improvement and that he's excited to keep coaching him up.

McCarthy's own reaction, relayed through Schefter, was about as measured as it gets for a guy who just lost a job he was handed the keys to a year ago. He said he wants to stay in Minnesota, called it the place he wants to be, and said it's on him to keep working while he waits for his number to get called again.

Where this leaves the QB room now gets interesting. Carson Wentz is sitting on an unusually rich $3 million deal to be QB3 unless Minnesota ships McCarthy elsewhere before the season, with names like a Harbaugh team or the Jets already floated as landing spots. For now, though, it's Murray's offense to run, with Justin Jefferson still the best receiver in the building and a defense that's reportedly been the story of camp. Whether a 1-year rental at wide-zone quarterback beats developing a former top-10 pick is the exact bet Kevin O'Connell just made with his season.
