Kyler Murray is steamrolling J.J. McCarthy for the Vikings job

Remember when this was supposed to be a real competition? Minnesota signed Kyler Murray to a one-year, veteran-minimum deal after Arizona released him in March, with the Cardinals still on the hook for $36.8 million of his salary, and the pitch was an open camp battle with J.J. McCarthy for the starting job. Six weeks later, that framing looks generous. Adam Schefter laid out where things stand plainly on the Pat McAfee Show.

Ian Rapoport backed that up on the same show, framing Murray as the guy with the experience edge even in a best-case world where McCarthy eventually takes over. That's not nothing given McCarthy's rookie-year detour — he missed all of 2024 with a torn meniscus, then got his first real shot in 2025 and finished 10 games with 11 touchdowns against 12 interceptions while cycling through a high-ankle sprain, a concussion and a fractured hand. Minnesota missed the playoffs. That's the resume Murray is currently running past in practice.

That's ESPN's Kevin Seifert, and his reporting matches the numbers coming out of camp: Murray has been taking roughly two-thirds of the first-team reps, while McCarthy keeps drawing the tougher rep sheet — working the No. 2 offense against Minnesota's No. 1 defense. Coaches will tell you that's a development tool, not a demotion. It's also exactly the assignment you give a guy who isn't winning the job outright.

Fantasy analysts have started pricing in the outcome before the Vikings even name a starter. Field Yates crunched Justin Jefferson's numbers and landed somewhere unusually confident for August.

Jefferson has averaged 1.99 fantasy points per target from every quarterback he's played with except McCarthy — which is the whole argument in one stat. A Murray-led offense theoretically unlocks the version of Jefferson that made him the best receiver in football before McCarthy's rocky rookie year dragged the numbers down. Camp reps back that up too, with Murray flashing the arm talent downfield.

None of this is official — Minnesota hasn't named a starter, and head coach Kevin O'Connell has kept the door open in his public comments. But the reporting, the snap counts and now the fantasy community are all pointing the same direction. The Vikings get their first real look at both quarterbacks in game action when the preseason opens on August 16, and that's when we'll find out if McCarthy can actually close a gap that, by every account right now, is only getting wider.
