LeBron's Sixers farewell tour is getting the full documentary treatment

LeBron James doesn't do anything small, and apparently that includes his walk-off. Reports broke this week that James, now 41 and locked into a 2-year veteran-minimum deal in Philadelphia alongside Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, and Tyrese Maxey, is closing in on a deal with ESPN for a full behind-the-scenes documentary tracking the 2026-27 season. The comparisons to Michael Jordan's "The Last Dance" were instant and obvious.

That's the whole bet here. Cameras following LeBron for an entire season in a new city, with a roster that's talented but has been snakebit by health and continuity issues for years, means there's no middle outcome to film. Either this ends with a parade and the greatest farewell chapter in NBA history, or it ends with ESPN cutting together a slow-motion disaster documentary while the internet loses its mind in real time. According to reporting, LeBron's longtime business partner Maverick Carter has already pushed back on the Last Dance framing, insisting James doesn't even know when his actual last season is -- which, sure, but nobody's going to stop calling it that now.

Barstool wasted zero time turning this into content. On the Pardon My Take set, Big Cat, Max, and PFT went straight for the throat, with Big Cat calling the whole thing a "clown show" and Max promising to "watch it so fuckin hard" while accusing his co-hosts of crying through it. PFT, naturally, landed the line of the segment, informing Max he's officially "becoming a Bronsexual."

The reaction says a lot about where LeBron sits in the discourse at this stage of his career -- love him or hate him, nobody's skipping the show. He's spent 2 decades being the most scrutinized athlete alive, and now he's voluntarily inviting a camera crew into year 23 or whatever this is, on a team that just added him for the veteran minimum because apparently prime-time relevance is worth more to him than another max contract somewhere quieter.

What makes this different from Jordan's Last Dance is timing. That documentary was shot live in 1997-98 and sat on a shelf for over 2 decades before airing after the fact, once everyone already knew how the story ended. This one is reportedly airing on a much shorter runway, meaning ESPN is filming a season without knowing whether it's building toward a championship storyline or a cautionary tale about chasing legacy in a new jersey too late. Either way, Philly just signed up to be the backdrop for the most-watched melodrama in basketball, and the only guarantee is Barstool's going to have a field day with every episode.
