USC didn't just win a recruiting battle when it landed Luke Wafle — it landed the top-ranked prospect in the entire country. The Hun School (Middletown, N.J.) product committed to the Trojans on June 19 after a recruitment that came down to the wire against Ohio State and Penn State, with NIL packages reportedly separating the two finalists by very little in the last 48 hours before his decision.
The pedigree isn't hype for hype's sake. Wafle put up 99 tackles and 23 sacks in his senior season and measured 6-foot-5, 255 pounds with arms over 33 inches even before he set foot on USC's campus. Rivals had him as the No. 1 overall prospect in the final 2026 rankings, and USC's class around him — headlined by five-star tight end Mark Bowman and a dozen other top-150 names — was the No. 1 haul in the country.
Now the early word out of camp is that the tools are translating immediately. On3's Pete Nakos reported Wafle has "lived up to the hype" since enrolling and is expected to be an instant contributor for USC this fall, adding that he's already added 10 pounds since spring while keeping that rare arm length and frame.
For a USC defense that's been searching for an identity up front, a true freshman EDGE with that kind of length and physical maturity showing out in fall camp is exactly the jolt the program needs. Lincoln Riley's staff — led on the recruiting trail by names like Nua, Henny and Lynn, who Wafle specifically credited for his decision — sold him on immediate opportunity, and it sounds like they're delivering on it.
It's still August, and hype out of fall camp has burned plenty of programs before. But when the No. 1 recruit in the country is already gaining weight, adding strength and getting singled out by name in scouting reports before he's played a snap that counts, it's worth paying attention. USC fans have been burned by disappointing D-lines in recent years — Wafle profiles as the kind of player who could change that story fast.
