Malachi Nelson set to start for Syracuse vs. Louisville

TLDR: Syracuse is expected to start former ESPN No. 1 overall recruit Malachi Nelson at quarterback against Louisville on Saturday night, with Amari Odom out and Steve Angeli questionable, per Pete Thamel.

The Orange quarterback room is down to whoever can still stand up, and Pete Thamel had the news Friday afternoon.

For Syracuse this is just another week. The Orange are the only FBS team to start 3 different quarterbacks this season. Angeli started the first 3 games, Odom took the UConn start, and Nelson got the ball at Virginia when Odom couldn't go. Now Odom is out entirely, Angeli is questionable, and the job falls back to the guy who was 4th in line for most of September.

Nelson didn't look like a 4th-stringer in Charlottesville. He went 16-for-29 for 217 yards and a touchdown, and Syracuse took a 17-7 lead into halftime. Then he got hurt in the 4th quarter, Georgetown transfer Danny Lauter came in and hit Daunte Bacheyie for a 46-yard touchdown with 2:50 left, and Syracuse still lost 28-25. The Orange fell to 0-3 in ACC play.

Nelson played well against Virginia in his first start for the Orange, throwing for 217 yards and a touchdown. He’s a former ESPN No. 1 overall recruit.

That 'former ESPN No. 1 overall recruit' line explains why people still care. Nelson came out of Los Alamitos High School in California and enrolled early at USC in January 2023, back when he was supposed to be Lincoln Riley's next quarterback. Then he transferred to Boise State in 2024, to UTEP in 2025, and to Syracuse in January 2026. That's 4 schools in 4 years. The talent that made him the top recruit in the country never went anywhere, and he has never stayed anywhere long enough for it to matter. Now he gets a Saturday night home game against an ACC opponent to show what's left of it.

There's one detail to keep an eye on. Nelson left the Virginia game hurt, and Thamel's report doesn't say what the injury was. If he's the starter, the expectation is he's healthy enough to play. With this team, though, the depth chart has changed every week, so nobody should assume he finishes the game until he actually does.

For Syracuse, the stakes are simple. The Orange have blown leads, run through quarterbacks and gone winless in conference play so far. A former No. 1 recruit playing well at home against Louisville is the best-case version of this season. If it goes badly, the Orange are looking at a Lauter start next week and a lost season.
