Chiefs rookie Mansoor Delane picked off Bo Nix on Denver's first drive, then never came back after landing hard on the same shoulder that cost him camp.

    The Chiefs traded up to No. 6 in this year's draft to get Mansoor Delane, sending Cleveland the No. 9, 74 and 148 picks to jump the Browns and grab the LSU corner before anyone else could. Kansas City's front office said they knew other teams up top wanted a corner too and didn't want to risk it. Delane, a unanimous All-American at LSU after transferring from Virginia Tech, was billed as a plug-and-play answer for a secondary that needed one.

    He didn't waste any time proving the price tag right. On Denver's opening possession Monday night, Bo Nix tried to go deep on 3rd-and-11, and Delane stepped in front of it for the pick, per Greg Auman (2099654238443799015), setting the Chiefs up at the Denver 46.

    It was the kind of debut that gets you a spot in the record books immediately. NFL Researcher pointed out Delane joined Marcus Peters as the only Chiefs first-round rookie corners to record an interception on their first drive in Week 1 (2099655173220241637), and Next Gen Stats had him targeted once in man coverage on that drive — and he came away with the ball. The pick also set up a Patrick Mahomes touchdown run, per ProFootballTalk, turning Delane's first career defensive series into 6 points on the other side of the ball.

    The problem showed up on the very play that made him famous. Delane landed on his right shoulder coming down with the interception — the same shoulder that had already cost him most of the offseason and the Chiefs' preseason opener, according to Nate Taylor. He was in the locker room by the second Broncos drive and never got back on the field.

    By the end of the first half, Delane's line — 1 interception, 0 snaps after his own team's second series — was already the headline item on a night full of notable rookie debuts, including Kenneth Walker III's 105 scrimmage yards. Then came the update nobody wanted: Adam Schefter reported the Chiefs had officially ruled Delane out for the rest of the game with the shoulder injury.

    It's a rough footnote to an otherwise perfect first impression. A No. 6 overall pick who'd already dealt with a shoulder issue serious enough to sideline him in August now has to answer the same questions again — whether this is a one-week absence or something that lingers into the season. For a Chiefs secondary that spent draft capital specifically to upgrade at corner, how Delane's shoulder responds over the next few days matters a lot more than one highlight-reel pick.
