Julio Rodriguez Is Back and Seattle's Race Just Changed

Julio Rodriguez is off the injured list and back in the Mariners lineup right as Seattle needs him most.

The Mariners got the news every Seattle fan has been refreshing Twitter for since the All-Star break: Julio Rodriguez is activated. MLB Trade Rumors confirmed the move, along with the corresponding paperwork designating utilityman Miles Mastrobuoni for assignment to clear his roster spot.

MLB Trade Rumors broke the corresponding transactions: Rodriguez activated, Mastrobuoni designated for assignment.

Rodriguez has been out since July 2, when he took a hard relay throw off the back of his helmet while standing on first base against the Angels. He stayed in the game through the next half-inning before the adrenaline wore off and the lightheadedness set in, and he was pulled and eventually landed on the 7-day concussion IL. It was the kind of scary, freak moment that makes a team hold its breath, especially with a 3-time All-Star at the center of it.

Mastrobuoni was the guy who stepped in and filled the gap while Rodriguez recovered, called up from Triple-A Tacoma for the corresponding move back on July 3. Getting designated for assignment now is just business as usual once a star comes off the IL, but it's a reminder of how thin these roster moves can feel in the middle of a pennant push.

The timing matters. Seattle came out of the All-Star break needing its best players healthy, and Rodriguez missing extended time in center field and in the middle of the order is the kind of thing that can quietly sink a summer. Concussions are also nothing to rush back from, so the fact that he's cleared to go says the symptoms resolved the way the Mariners were hoping.

For a Seattle team trying to hang in a crowded playoff picture, getting a healthy Rodriguez back in the lineup is as close to a trade-deadline addition as it gets without giving up any prospects. Fantasy managers who've been staring at an empty outfield slot can also exhale. Now it's just about whether he can shake off a couple weeks of rust and get back to being the guy the Mariners built their lineup around.
