Mathew Barzal has no return timeline, Darche says

TLDR: Islanders GM Mathieu Darche says he cannot give a definite timeline for Mathew Barzal's return, so a knee problem that has kept him out all season is still open-ended.

Darche met the media Tuesday and got asked the only Islanders question anyone cares about right now. He gave the honest answer, which was not the one people wanted.

“Can I give you a definite timeline? No.” #Isles GM Mathieu Darche discusses Mathew Barzal’s efforts to return to playing and Scott Mayfield’s status t.co/8z2WTBJCwa

For the backstory, this is the same left knee Barzal hurt on February 1, 2025, when he blocked a Darren Raddysh shot. It flared up again before camp. On September 17 the Islanders shut him down for 2 weeks with inflammation, and Darche said then that it was something the team had been managing for over a year. Those 2 weeks were supposed to be the worst case. Barzal missed opening night against Toronto on September 30 and still hasn't played a game this season. He has been skating on his own, but that hasn't led to anything yet.

The most telling thing Darche said wasn't about dates. It was about who decides. According to him, the doctors are fine with Barzal ramping up and the final call depends a lot on how the player feels.

Mathieu Darche on Barzal: “The doctors would be comfortable for him to ramp up whenever he’s ready. So it’s not ‘Oh it’s all him,’ or ‘It’s all us (making the decision).’ We’re trying to work together on this but of course he has a big say. It’s his body. He knows how he feels.”

Read that one again. If the medical staff is comfortable and the player isn't on the ice yet, the holdup is strength and comfort, not a scan. Darche was diplomatic and said 'it's his body,' and that's fair. But it also means nobody outside that room can put a date on this, including the bettors and fantasy managers who keep checking injury reports. Until Barzal practices with the team, every return-date guess is a coin flip.

It matters this much because Barzal is still the engine of this offense. Last season he played 81 games and put up 19 goals and 72 points. An Islanders team without him is missing its best puck-carrier, and that shows every night they try to break out of their own zone.

Darche also had to put out a second fire at the same media session. Reports had Scott Mayfield possibly asking out, and his agent was at the game the night before. That's usually all it takes for a rumor to catch.

Mathieu Darche on reports that Scott Mayfield may ask for a trade: “There’s no truth to any of those rumors.” Mayfield’s agent, Matt Keator, was at UBS last night

Darche said Mayfield hasn't asked for a trade and the team hasn't asked him to waive his full no-trade clause. He said the agent, Matt Keator, was in the building because he also represents a player on the other team. That one sounds closed. The Barzal one doesn't, and it was enough for a full segment on the uncertainty.

What to watch for next is simple: Barzal in a regular practice jersey, skating with the team. Darche said once that happens the team gets real clarity. Until then, 'can I give you a definite timeline? No.' is the official status, and Islanders fans just have to wait.
