Mets Nearly Blow It Before Holding On Vs. Braves

The Mets built a 10-3 ninth-inning lead over the Braves, then made everyone sweat before finally closing it out.

A 7-run cushion in the 9th should be automatic. It should not require a postgame press release. But that's exactly what the Mets put their fanbase through, turning a laugher into a legitimate hold-your-breath finish against Atlanta.

That's not a typo. A 10-3 lead turned into a 10-8 game on a 383-foot bomb, and suddenly a laugher had a pulse. Mets Twitter did what Mets Twitter always does in these spots — assumed the worst before it happened.

Gotta fire Mendoza again if you lose this game

That's the reflex with this fanbase — light the manager on fire first, ask questions later. Mendoza's seat gets warm every time a big lead gets interesting, regardless of how the game actually ends.

Barstool Baseball confirmed the Mets actually got the job done, closing it out 10-9.

So no, they didn't blow it. But a 7-run lead shrinking to one before the Mets could finish the job is the kind of finish that lives rent-free until the next shaky 9th inning rolls around. The win counts the same in the standings — the anxiety just lingers a little longer.
