New York is selecting Christopher Morel's contract from Triple-A Syracuse ahead of the Padres series, giving the club another versatile bat and glove for the stretch run. MLB Trade Rumors broke the news early Monday, and it's the kind of low-cost, high-upside flier the Mets have been shopping for all summer.

Morel's road to Queens has been a bumpy one. He mashed 24 home runs across 2023-24 between the Cubs and Rays, but Tampa Bay non-tendered him after last season. Miami took a flier on him with a one-year, $2 million deal, and it went sideways fast — a.425 OPS and 28 strikeouts in just 73 plate appearances got him designated for assignment.

The Mets scooped him up on a minor league deal in late June, and Morel used the opportunity to torch Triple-A pitching. He hit.321/.382/.716 with 12 home runs in only 123 plate appearances for Syracuse — the kind of ridiculous slash line that forces a front office's hand, even for a guy who's struggled to find his footing in the majors.

The financials make this an easy call for New York. Miami is still on the hook for the remainder of that $2 million guarantee, meaning the Mets only owe Morel the prorated league minimum for whatever time he spends on the active roster. Basically zero downside for a player who can play multiple infield and outfield spots.

To make room, the Mets need both a 26-man and 40-man roster move, with utility man Gabriel Arias reportedly the more likely candidate to be squeezed out over outfielder Cristian Pache. Morel's positional flexibility is exactly why he wins that battle — he gives the bench a switch-hitting power threat who can slide around the diamond as needed.

Whether Morel turns into a real difference-maker or another reclamation project that fizzles out remains to be seen, but the Mets are betting his Triple-A tear translates. With a stacked schedule and a lineup that could use another jolt, it's a cheap swing worth taking.
