Evans signed with the 49ers as one of the marquee free-agent additions of the offseason, ending a legendary run in Tampa Bay to help Kyle Shanahan's offense chase a Super Bowl. Instead of a clean camp, he's been dealing with a quad strain that popped up on August 1 and has limited his practice reps ever since.
The injury has been a slow burn rather than a scare. Evans returned to practice around mid-August, but then left San Francisco's joint session with the Chargers early and was seen icing the leg, which reignited the worry a couple weeks before games start to count.

That's where NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco comes in. Per @SleeperNFL, Maiocco believes Evans will be ready to go for Week 1 against the Rams, framing the cautious practice approach as exactly that -- caution, not a red flag. "I think they're playing it safe," he said.
Playing it safe makes sense given the calendar. San Francisco doesn't kick off until Thursday, Sept. 10, and it's not a normal opener -- the 49ers and Rams are set to play the NFL's first-ever regular-season game in Melbourne, Australia. There's no reason to rush a veteran receiver back onto the practice field in August when the actual opener is still weeks away on the other side of the planet.
It's also not like Evans is the only banged-up name in that receiver room. Ricky Pearsall is already out for the season with a knee injury that needs surgery, rookie De'Zhaun Stribling has been nursing a hamstring, and Christian Kirk has been sidelined with a calf strain since the first practice of camp. Shanahan built this offense around adding a true No. 1 alongside Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle -- if Evans is banged up in Melbourne too, the whole plan takes a hit before it even starts.
For now, the read from the 49ers beat is optimistic: a strained quad, a cautious camp, and a season opener that's still far enough away for Evans to be full go. That's the version worth trusting until something changes.
