Missouri State names Skyler Locklear starter for Texas A&M opener

TLDR: Missouri State handed Skyler Locklear the keys after a fall camp battle, and his first pass as a Bear comes at No. 8 Texas A&M.
Missouri State has its quarterback, and it's the guy with the most starts under his belt. ESPN's Pete Thamel reported the Bears have named Skyler Locklear, a fifth-year transfer by way of UTEP and Austin Peay, their starting quarterback for the 2026 season opener at No. 8 Texas A&M.

Sources: Missouri State has named veteran transfer Skyler Locklear the school’s starting quarterback, and he’ll debut for the Bears at No. 8 Texas A&M in the season opener. Locklear is a transfer from UTEP/Austin Peay, starting 16 games at UTEP over the last two seasons.
Locklear isn't walking into Kyle Field as a mystery. He's started 16 games at UTEP over the last 2 seasons, throwing for 23 touchdowns against 17 interceptions during that stretch, per Thamel. That's real college snaps against Conference USA defenses, which matters a lot when your first outing under center is on the road against an SEC top-10 team.

Locklear is a fifth-year player who threw for 23 touchdowns and 17 interceptions while at UTEP. He edged out Duke transfer Henry Belin in a close training camp battle to be first-year coach Casey Woods’ opening day quarterback.
The job wasn't handed to him. Thamel notes Locklear edged out Duke transfer Henry Belin in what was described as a close training camp battle, with first-year head coach Casey Woods making the call. Woods, who spent 4 seasons as SMU's offensive coordinator before taking over the Bears program, is now staking his opening act on the veteran arm over the blue-blood pedigree — Belin arrives from Duke, a Power 4 program, while Locklear's résumé is built entirely at the Group of 5/FCS level.
That decision says something about what Woods values in year 1: experience and reps over shiny transfer-portal branding. A quarterback competition that runs all the way through fall camp usually means it was genuinely close, and Belin isn't walking away — he's the obvious break-glass option if Locklear struggles out of the gate.
The stage for the debut is about as tough as it gets for a first-time Missouri State starter. This is the first-ever meeting between the two programs, and the Bears are walking into College Station to open the season against a ranked SEC opponent. Locklear's UTEP numbers were solid against Conference USA competition, but nothing about that level prepares a quarterback for the jump in speed and pressure he's about to see. If he settles in against Texas A&M, the Bears' season opens with a lot more optimism than most Group of 5 programs get in Week 1.
