Every few months the internet coughs up a fresh MLB realignment map and every few months it gets dunked into the sun. The latest version is a doozy: jam the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, and Phillies into the same division, then sit back and watch four of the loudest fan bases in the sport claw each other to death 19 times a year. On paper it sounds like ratings gold. In practice it would set baseball on fire.
The pitch is obvious: more Yankees-Red Sox, more Mets-Phillies, more Subway Series, more I-95 hate. But that's also exactly why it doesn't work. Yankees-Red Sox is a brand because they only see each other a handful of pivotal times a year. Turn it into a 19-game grind and you don't have a rivalry anymore, you have a regular Tuesday. Same with Mets-Phillies, a feud that's finally cooking again after years of mutual irrelevance. You don't put the four richest, angriest fan bases in the sport in one bracket and call it a division. You call it a hostage situation.
There's also the small matter of what happens to everyone else. Three of those four teams currently live in the AL East and NL East, divisions that already have their own histories — the Rays, Orioles, Blue Jays, Braves, Nationals, Marlins. You can't just rip the marquee names out and pretend the leftover divisions still mean something. It's the kind of idea that sounds great if you only watch the postseason and have never sat through a 162-game schedule.
Realignment is going to keep coming up — expansion to 32 teams is on the horizon and the league has openly toyed with redrawing the map. But this version, the one currently circling timelines, is the lazy one. Stack the blue bloods, ignore everything else, and hope the rivalry juice carries it. Baseball can do better, and judging by the reaction, fans are already telling them so.
