NEC set to hire Dan Lynch as commissioner

TLDR: The NEC is set to hire Dan Lynch, the former Chief Commercial Officer of the New York/New Jersey World Cup, to replace Noreen Morris after her 16 years as commissioner.
The league wanted someone who knows how to sell, and by Pete Thamel's account it found him.
Sources: The NEC is set to hire Dan Lynch as the conference’s new commissioner. He was last the Chief Commercial Officer of the New York/New Jersey World Cup. The NEC sought someone with commercial experience, and he brings ties to pro sports from his time with the VP of Media Sales and Partnerships of the Brooklyn Nets and the as the VP of Corporate Partnerships at the New York Giants.
Look at the résumé, because it tells you what the NEC is after. Lynch was VP of Media Sales and Partnerships for the Brooklyn Nets and VP of Corporate Partnerships for the New York Giants, then ran the commercial side for the New York/New Jersey World Cup. He has spent his career in sponsorships, media deals and the corporate suite, not in an NCAA compliance office. Per Thamel, that was the plan: the NEC went looking for commercial experience on purpose.
He's replacing a long-timer. Noreen Morris announced in April that she would step down effective September 1, 2026, after more than 16 years running the league, and move on to become Executive Director of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards. Her NEC run included 3 strategic plans and several media rights contracts, and she chaired a long list of NCAA committees along the way.
Her tenure was also a constant fight to keep the league together. Morris took over in 2010, and in that time 5 schools joined the NEC while 8 left. When you're a low-major league in the Northeast, the programs that win get poached, and you are always rebuilding the membership.
The league has already started to reinvent itself. On October 2, 2025, it dropped the Northeast Conference name and became just the NEC. Hiring a guy from pro sports and World Cup sales is the same kind of move. The money in college athletics right now is in media rights and partnerships, and a league with the NEC's footprint has to find every dollar it can.
What to watch next is the official announcement and what Lynch does first. The real test is whether his New York pro-sports contacts can bring in the kind of media and sponsorship deals a league of the NEC's size usually doesn't get. If he can pull that off, the NEC just made a sharp hire. If he can't, it's one more league learning that selling the Giants and selling a mid-major are very different jobs.
