Lombardi lawyers up as UNC's Belichick era spirals further

Bill Belichick's first season at North Carolina hasn't kicked off yet and the program is already dealing with a full-blown personnel crisis. Michael Lombardi, the general manager Belichick brought with him to Chapel Hill, was placed on administrative leave last week, and UNC has now confirmed it's formally investigating an HR complaint tied to that decision.

Statement from UNC: “As a result of concerns behind allegations that led to the personnel action regarding Michael Lombardi announced on July 27, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, through its Office of University Counsel, is in the process of investigating this matter. Because this involves confidential personnel issues, the University will not comment on the nature of the allegations or discuss personnel information.”

UNC's statement was deliberately vague, citing "concerns behind allegations" that led to the personnel action and declining to detail the nature of the complaint because it involves confidential personnel matters. That kind of silence tends to fill in the blanks with speculation fast, especially with a program this scrutinized.

There's also a parallel thread worth separating out: reporting indicates there's currently no CSC investigation into UNC football itself, but the NIL enforcement body has reportedly been asking questions about Lombardi's dealings in recent weeks.

Late Friday, Lombardi's side pushed back. He's retained Tom Mars, a lawyer with a track record in college sports fights, and Mars gave a statement to ESPN's Pete Thamel making clear Lombardi hasn't been given specifics on what UNC is even looking into.

UNC football General Manager Michael Lombardi, who was placed on leave this week, has retained Tom Mars, a prominent attorney in the college space. Mars released a statement to ESPN: “Michael hasn’t been told anything about the nature of UNC’s investigation and welcomes the opportunity to clear his name, which has already been sullied by baseless statements and innuendo on social media.....1/2

The follow-up half of that statement is the real ask: Lombardi says he's fully cooperating and wants people to let the investigation actually finish before assuming anything about what's alleged.

The timing makes this especially awkward. Lombardi is reportedly the highest-paid general manager in college football at $1.5 million a year, brought in by Belichick after the two reunited in December 2024, and UNC is scheduled to open the season against TCU in Dublin, Ireland on August 29. That's less than a month away, and the program still doesn't have clarity on whether its GM will be back on the sideline by then.

For a Belichick regime that's already generated more headlines for off-field drama than football, this is another gut-check moment. Whether Lombardi's name gets cleared or the investigation turns up something real, UNC now has to run this process in public with the season clock ticking.
