Timmy Chang's Rainbow Warriors kick off their season today at Stanford Stadium, and they're doing it without the guy who touched the ball more than anyone else on the roster last year. Pete Thamel reported Saturday that Pofele Ashlock, Hawaii's leading receiver, will miss the opener with a knee injury.
NEWS: Hawaii will be without leading receiver Pofele Ashlock (knee) against Stanford today, coach Timmy Chang told ESPN. Ashlock earned second-team All-Mountain West last year and led the team with 76 receptions. He had 827 yards, 8 touchdowns and 10 catches of moe than 20 yards.
This isn't some new tweak. Ashlock has been dealing with the knee since March, and he was already held out of drills when Hawaii opened training camp back in late July. Chang said at the time there was no firm timetable for his return, even as the receiver insisted he was ahead of schedule in his rehab. Now the opener has arrived and the answer is still no.
The absence matters because Ashlock isn't just a name on the depth chart — he was the engine of Hawaii's passing game. Per Thamel's numbers, he caught 76 passes for 827 yards and 8 touchdowns last season, with 10 catches of 20-plus yards, good enough for a second-team All-Mountain West selection. He was also named to the conference's 2026 preseason first team, which tells you how much the Warriors were counting on him before the injury news broke.
Hawaii comes into this one riding momentum — the Warriors won 9 games last season, their most since 2019, and Chang, now in his fifth year at his alma mater, has the program pointed in the right direction. But this is also new territory for both sides: it's the first meeting between these two at Stanford Stadium, part of the Cardinal's Week 0 slate that also doubles as a Pacific Islander heritage celebration for the home team. Stanford holds a 4-1 series edge in games played in Honolulu, so the road environment flips today.
Losing a receiver who accounted for that much production is never ideal in a season opener, especially on the road against a Power Conference opponent. Hawaii will need someone else in that receiver room to step up early while Chang and his staff wait for Ashlock's knee to clear him for game action — whenever that ends up being.
