Puka Nacua's payday gets put on hold

It's not exactly the news Rams fans wanted heading into training camp. Puka Nacua, one of the best young receivers in football, isn't getting a new deal this offseason. Instead he's stuck playing out the last year of the rookie contract he signed as a 5th-round pick back in 2023.

That report comes straight from Ian Rapoport, who says Nacua is "poised to play out the final year of his rookie contract" before he and the Rams even start negotiating an extension or franchise tag situation next offseason. For a guy who set the NFL rookie receiving record with 1,486 yards in 2023 on a deal worth roughly $4.08 million total, that's a wild gap between what he's produced and what he's getting paid.

So why the delay on a guy this good? It's not about the on-field tape — it's off the field. Nacua checked into a rehab facility back in March for what was described as personal growth, around the same time he was accused of making antisemitic statements and biting a woman during an incident. He was also fined $25,000 after criticizing officials during a locker-room livestream, a stream that reportedly featured an antisemitic gesture and rubbed his own teammates the wrong way.

Sean McVay has publicly said Nacua's "heart is in the right place," which reads like coach-speak for "we still believe in the talent, but we need to see the version of this guy who isn't making headlines for the wrong reasons before we hand him nine figures." That's a fair stance for a franchise that just watched its receiver rack up off-field baggage in the same offseason he was supposed to be cashing in.

Now Nacua plays out 2026 with no long-term security, betting on himself to have a monster contract-year season and clean up his image at the same time. If he does both, the Rams will have a real decision to make: pay up, or slap the franchise tag on one of the league's most productive young receivers and kick the can another year. Either way, the next 12 months are going to say a lot about where this partnership is actually headed.
