This is the time of year job security stops being theoretical. Camp is here, reps are being counted, and at three of the SEC's marquee programs nobody actually knows who's taking the first snap of Week 1 yet. On3's Pete Nakos has been tracking all three battles as they unfold, and as of the start of August, all of them are still very much live.
Tennessee is the most dramatic of the bunch. Josh Heupel is replacing his starter for a 5th straight season after Joey Aguilar exhausted his eligibility, and the internal competition is between redshirt freshman George MacIntyre and true freshman Faizon Brandon, the No. 2 overall recruit in the 2026 class. Brandon reportedly arrived on campus ahead of schedule physically and has outplayed expectations enough that multiple insiders now view MacIntyre's path to QB1 as an uphill climb — a pretty stunning development for a former 4-star who was supposed to have the inside track.
Alabama's version of this story is lower-drama but no less consequential. The Crimson Tide have to replace Ty Simpson, who left as an NFL first-round pick, and the battle is between Keelon Russell and Austin Mack. Mack got real run last season as the backup, throwing for 228 yards and 2 touchdowns while adding a rushing score, so this isn't a total unknown quantity — it's two guys with tape trying to separate in real practice reps.
Florida's situation is arguably the most volatile of the 3. DJ Lagway, who went 10-9 as Florida's starter over the last 2 seasons, left in the portal and landed at Baylor, blowing the job wide open. The favorites now are redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr., who flashed as Lagway's backup last year, and Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo, who's reuniting with his old offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner in Gainesville. Reports out of camp suggest Philo has the early edge, but nothing's been decided.
None of this stays theoretical for long. Betting markets, media day storylines and fan bases at all 3 programs are going to be locked onto every practice report between now and Week 1, and On3 says it plans to update the picture all August as jobs are won and lost in real time. In a conference this loaded, the quarterback question is the whole season.
