Rashid Shaheed knee good news; Seahawks lose Charles Cross

TLDR: Mike Macdonald says early returns are positive on Rashid Shaheed's knee after Seattle's 20-3 win over the Chiefs, but left tackle Charles Cross has a high-ankle sprain and could miss 1-2 weeks.

The scare started just before halftime Sunday night. Shaheed ran into Jaxon Smith-Njigba on a Sam Darnold interception, and he never came back out for the second half.

Seattle WR Rashid Shaheed will not return tonight due to a knee injury; Seahawks RB Velus Jones Jr. is out due to a hamstring injury.

Shaheed finished with 22 snaps and 2 catches on 3 targets for 1 yard, so the knee was not taking a big night away from him. The worry is the weeks ahead. Seattle was already running thin at receiver and in the backfield, and losing Velus Jones Jr. to a hamstring on the same night did not help.

Seattle did not need him anyway. The defense choked Kansas City out, and Smith-Njigba went off against man coverage, the exact look that had been giving him trouble all year.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught 5 of his 6 targets for 85 yards and a touchdown against the Chiefs' man coverage. Smith-Njigba gained more receiving yards against man in this game than he did in his first six games this season combined (80). Powered by @awscloud

The defensive number is the one that should scare the rest of the league. Kansas City did not get inside the 20 once all night, and nobody can remember the last time that happened to Patrick Mahomes. Turns out nobody can, because it never had.

During the Chiefs’ 20-3 loss to the Seahawks, Kansas City never reached the red zone, the first time that has happened in a Patrick Mahomes NFL start, with Sunday being his 153rd career start including playoffs.

By Monday the news was mostly good. Macdonald said the early returns on Shaheed's knee were positive, and the national insiders all used the same word, good, which is about as much as you get the morning after a knee injury. He still has to show something in practice this week before Monday night against the Bears.

The real loss was up front. Cross left in the 4th quarter with an ankle injury, and the MRI turned out worse than anyone hoped.

#Seahawks OT Charles Cross, who suffered an ankle injury on Sunday, has a high-ankle sprain and will miss time, the MRI revealed. The hope is he’s back in 1-2 weeks, but it depends on how rehab goes.

Help is coming in the backfield, at least. Macdonald said Seattle will open Jadarian Price's 21-day window to return from injured reserve after he served the 4-game minimum with a chest injury, and Zach Charbonnet is working back from his knee injury too. If both are ready, Seattle goes into the Bears game with a crowded backfield. Pass protection is the bigger question with Cross out, and a high-ankle sprain has a way of turning 1-2 weeks into 4. Watch Shaheed's practice reps this week. That is how you will know if the good news holds.
