Polyana Viana May Have Invented A Brand New Way To Lose A Fight

MMA has been around long enough that you'd think we'd seen every conceivable way to end a fight. Triangles, twisters, calf slicers, the occasional Von Flue choke when somebody forgets the guillotine rulebook. And then Polyana Viana showed up at the Apex on Saturday night and apparently filed a patent on a finish that nobody in the sport had ever bothered to draw up.

Viana, the Brazilian strawweight best remembered for clocking a would-be mugger in the face a few years back, is a legit grappler. She's got submission wins on her resume. So when she went to the mat and started working a leglock entry, that's a position she's comfortable in. The problem is the figure-four is a two-way street. Whatever pretzel she built ended up squeezing her own leg harder than her opponent's, and the tap came from the wrong person.

You watch the video and the question writes itself: has anyone, anywhere, in any sanctioned MMA fight, ever tapped to their own submission attempt? Guys have broken their own hands throwing punches. Fighters have blown out knees throwing kicks. Mirko Cro Cop once knocked himself silly on a slip. But verbally or physically submitting to a hold YOU are applying to YOURSELF? That's new territory. That's a record book entry with an asterisk that just says 'how.'

It's the kind of finish that's going to live on highlight reels forever, which is rough for Viana because she's a real fighter having a genuinely bizarre night, not some Dana White Contender Series rando who wandered in off the street. But the cage doesn't grade on a curve. Whatever the official scorecard says, the internet has already decided this one is going in the time capsule.
