An EMT Takes One Where It Counts In Kansas City

By Vinnie the Gooch·1 min read

The job description for a dugout EMT is to patch up the players. Nobody warned this guy he'd be the one needing the ice pack.

Foul balls into the dugout are baseball's most reliable jump-scare. Players bail off the rail, bat boys duck, and somewhere a coach pretends he saw it the whole time. On Wednesday night in Kansas City, the foul ball found the one guy in the building whose entire reason for being there is to handle medical emergencies. The EMT became the emergency.

There is a universal language to a shot like this. Everyone in the dugout sees it land, everyone winces in the same half-second, and then the laughter starts before the poor guy has even hit the ground. It is not a hometown thing or a fanbase thing. Watch any dude watch this clip and you can clock the exact frame his soul leaves his body in sympathy.

And of course it kept rolling all day, because cup-check content is undefeated and the Royals just handed everyone a perfect specimen. The dugout EMT, of all people. The guy with the medical bag, who came to work prepared for hamstring tweaks and HBPs, ate a line drive in the last place anyone wants to take one. Hope the man's okay. Hope he also knows he's the main character of the day whether he wants to be or not.
