Sacramento State coach Alonzo Carter has his quarterback, and it's a familiar face. The Hornets have named junior Carson Conklin their starter heading into Week 0, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported, putting the program's biggest historical leap in the hands of a guy who's already lived a full college football life at 20-something years old.
Conklin isn't walking into an unfamiliar building. He was Sac State's starter as a true freshman back in 2024, and it was a monster debut season by any standard: 2,876 passing yards and 28 touchdowns, numbers that set program freshman records and earned him FCS Freshman All-American honors. Then he hit the portal, chasing an FBS shot at Fresno State for 2025.
That stop didn't go the way anyone drew it up. Conklin appeared in six games for the Bulldogs, completing 47 of 96 passes for 354 yards and a touchdown — modest numbers, but he did have one signature moment, leading Fresno State to a win at Boise State that snapped the Broncos' 16-game home winning streak. He went 2-1 as Fresno's starter before the job situation shifted and he landed back in the portal, this time heading home to Sacramento.
The Hornets debut as MAC members at Eastern Michigan in Week 0. Conklin appeared in six games at Fresno State in 2025 before transferring back to Sac State. He was 2-1 as a starter at Fresno, including a win over Boise State.
The timing couldn't be bigger for Sac State. This isn't just a quarterback competition resolving itself — it's the Hornets' actual FBS debut, and their first-ever MAC game, set for Week 0 on the road against Eastern Michigan on August 29. There's no soft landing spot; Sac State is jumping straight into conference play against a program that's been playing at this level for decades.
Handing that opener to Conklin is as much a bet on continuity as talent. He's already proven he can be an FCS-level star at this exact school, and he's got real FBS reps and a road win at a ranked-ish (at the time) Boise State team under his belt — rare experience for a guy walking into a program's first major-conference snap. Whether that freshman-year ceiling shows back up or the modest Fresno numbers are the more accurate read is going to define how Sac State's leap to the MAC actually goes.
