It's the kind of news that stops scrolling thumbs cold. Adam Schefter broke word Saturday that Eagles running back Saquon Barkley and his family were inside their home when someone attempted to burglarize it, and thankfully nobody got hurt.
Per police, officers were dispatched to Barkley's home just after 5 a.m. ET Saturday on a burglary-in-progress call. At least one suspect had already made it inside the house while the family was home before fleeing the scene. Cops are still hunting for at least two suspects and put out a photo of a white SUV they believe is tied to the attempted break-in. The DA's office currently believes nothing was actually taken.
This isn't happening in a vacuum. Barkley now joins a growing and unsettling list of NFL stars targeted at home, following Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Joe Burrow, all of whom had their residences hit in recent years. Federal prosecutors have already charged 7 men connected to that string of burglaries, and Tredyffrin Township Police say they'll loop in federal authorities to see if this incident connects to the same theft rings targeting pro athletes.
The timing stings a little extra given where Barkley is in his career right now. He's coming off signing a 2-year, $41.2 million extension with the Eagles that made him the league's first $20 million-plus running back on a new-money basis, the reward for an MVP-caliber season that helped deliver Philly a title run. The last thing anyone wants is a superstar looking over his shoulder at his own front door.
For now, the important part is the only one that matters: Saquon and his family are safe. The investigation into who tried to get into that house, and whether it's linked to the broader pattern of athlete break-ins, is just getting started.
