Kevin Jennings' fall camp got weird fast. The SMU quarterback caught his throwing hand in a locker room door last Friday and jammed a finger badly enough that head coach Rhett Lashlee pulled him from practice reps and handed the keys to backup Ty Hawkins for the time being. Freak injury, ugly way to lose camp snaps, and exactly the kind of thing that makes a fan base nervous four weeks out from a season opener.

Brett McMurphy, who covers this stuff for a living, is now reporting Jennings is ahead of schedule in his recovery. That tracks with what Lashlee himself said earlier in the week — 'no long-term effects' and 'a really good report' from the team's medical staff after the initial scare. Doctors reportedly figured Jennings would be limited for 1 to 2 weeks. If he's already beating that timeline, SMU just dodged a real problem.
Context matters here because Jennings isn't some camp arm battling for a job — he's the guy who started all 13 games in 2025, threw for over 3,600 yards and 26 touchdowns, and helped drag SMU back to the ACC Championship Game in the program's second straight trip since jumping to the league. Losing him for any real chunk of camp, let alone into the season, would've been a gut punch for a Mustangs team with legit playoff aspirations again.
The bigger relief is the calendar. SMU doesn't open the season until Sept. 7 against Florida State in prime time, so even a couple weeks of limited reps now barely dents the runway. Lashlee has framed the injury almost as an accidental bonus — a chance to rest Jennings' arm and legs early in camp before the real grind starts.
None of that changes the annoyance of the injury itself, or the fact that Hawkins is soaking up first-team snaps that were supposed to belong to the incumbent. But if McMurphy's sourcing holds up, this turns into a camp footnote instead of a season-altering story — the kind of thing SMU fans forget about by the time the Mustangs are boarding the plane for Tallahassee.
