Stephen Daley, Kellan Wyatt Stay Eligible For Indiana-Howard
A rescheduled court date bought Indiana's two defensive linemen one more week of eligibility, and they'll be able to suit up against Howard.
Indiana defensive ends Stephen Daley and Kellan Wyatt were staring down the possibility of missing Week 2, but the calendar just did them a favor. Their preliminary injunction hearing, originally set for last Friday, got bumped to September 14 — after Saturday's game against Howard. That means the temporary restraining order keeping them eligible is still in effect when Indiana kicks off.

The backstory here is a genuinely messy NCAA mess. Daley and Wyatt are both high school class of 2022 guys, and they sued the NCAA believing the new 'five-years-in-five' eligibility rule had specifically excluded their grad class from an extra year of competition. Turns out that exclusionary language they were fighting didn't actually exist in the rule as written — but the damage was already done, and an Indiana judge granted the TRO anyway, ruling the pair would suffer 'immediate and irreparable harm' if kept off the field.
It's a low-key big deal for a defense that's still figuring out its rotation up front. Daley played 13 snaps in the opener against North Texas, picking up a tackle and a pressure, while Wyatt barely saw the field. Neither is walking into a starting role against Howard, but every rep matters for depth pieces trying to prove they belong in a Big Ten trench.
This isn't some one-off quirk of Indiana's roster, either — it's part of a wider fight. Daley and Wyatt were two of eight athletes nationally challenging the NCAA over the same five-years-in-five language, and their case is now a bellwether for how the rule gets applied to that entire high school class.
The real deadline is September 14, when the preliminary injunction hearing actually happens. If the court sides with the NCAA, Daley and Wyatt's college careers could get cut short on the spot. For now, though, Indiana gets its bodies back for Howard, and the Hoosiers will take the procedural win and worry about the legal one next week.
