College football's roster math just got scrambled. A preliminary injunction out of a Colorado federal court found that athletes from the Class of 2022 -- guys the NCAA's new age-based eligibility model had quietly cut off from a 5th season -- are actually entitled to one. That's not a small technicality. It means players who thought they'd already played their last down are suddenly free agents for an extra year, and programs are scrambling to figure out who from their old rosters just became eligible again.

Indiana has moved faster and harder on this than anybody. Curt Cignetti's staff already brought back defensive lineman Stephen Daley, who led the Big Ten in tackles for loss last season before a knee injury in the conference title game knocked him out of the CFP entirely. Cignetti didn't hide his excitement about getting him back.

I know one thing about him, he'll give it his best shot, he really will, and we'll just see what happens." Adds that he emerged as "the most dominant defensive lineman in Big Ten."

Then Indiana doubled up. Days after landing Daley, the Hoosiers added linebacker Kellan Wyatt, a Maryland transfer who started 35 games in his career and racked up 23.0 tackles for loss and 11 sacks before a season-ending injury cut his 2025 short. That's 2 major defensive pieces added back to an already loaded front in the same week, and Indiana's staff has made clear they're not done scouring old rosters.

Now the ripple is hitting the receiver market. Justus Ross-Simmons bounced from Colorado State to Syracuse and put up 100 career catches for 1,662 yards and 13 touchdowns, and according to his rep, he's exploring a return for a 5th season under the same Colorado ruling. He'd join Daley, Wyatt and Indiana tight end Holden Staes on the growing list of players testing whether they can squeeze one more year out of a system that thought it had already closed the door on them.

The catch, as the judge in the case made clear, is that this ruling doesn't override roster limits, transfer rules or revenue-sharing caps -- so even if a guy is granted eligibility, a school still has to have a spot and a budget line for him. That's why most programs are still playing wait-and-see while Indiana sprints ahead. With the NCAA already appealing and more lawsuits like the Georgia case working through the courts, this is shaping up to be one of the messier offseason storylines in college football, and rosters could keep shifting well into fall camp.
