He said the staff will "coach defense collectively" rather than name a single interim coordinator, and that they're hoping to get Steve back "as soon as possible." No word on what's actually wrong, and no clear answer on whether he'll be back for the opener.

That opener, for what it's worth, is a season-launching trip to Dublin to face TCU on August 29 — hardly the low-pressure stage you'd want to be breaking in a new defensive voice for, even a collective one. Steve is 39 and just wrapped his first season on staff after following his dad from the Patriots' front office to Chapel Hill in 2025.
