Nicky Smokes, Jeff D. Lowe trade barbs as Surviving Barstool's Episode 9 airs tonight

Surviving Barstool has always run on grudges outlasting the actual game, and this week is proof. Ever since the last episode dropped, cast members have been publicly relitigating who made moves, who had alliances, and who got played -- all while the show barrels toward its finale.

Nicky Smokes kicked off the round of finger-pointing by insisting his tribe made "big/dumb moves" that could have flipped the game, but that Tommy Smokes "played friends" instead. He also took a shot at how conveniently an idol clue turned up for Glenny, questioning how production and the show's medic were looped in on it.

Our tribe made big/dumb moves. The game coulda flipped, but tommy played friends. I still don't get how Tate did 100,000 steps around the office and couldn't find one, but Glenny takes a stroll to the snack cabinet and there's one waiting for him on top of a water cooler.

That fairness question didn't sit well with Jeff D. Lowe, who runs the game. Nicky told him directly that he thinks Jeff runs "a fair and great game" and that losers just complain -- but Jeff couldn't resist needling him back, saying he wished Nicky had actually found the idol and blown the whole thing up.

The idol discourse wasn't just a Nicky-and-Jeff thing, either -- Sports Central was out there asking on the record whether Jeff D. Lowe simply put too many idols into this season, and Jeff himself posted a talking-head clip from his car agreeing with Dave Portnoy that the format needed tighter restrictions on how idols get used. It's the kind of self-scouting report you don't usually get mid-season, and it suggests the idol rules could look different if the show gets another year.

Then the Nicky drama went from strategy talk to something more personal. A feud with Reed escalated fast enough that the YAK crew broke it down on air, pairing Reed's post with a lengthy, over-the-top apology Nicky put out -- "Yesterday I won every battle, today I lost the war" -- that read like a full Anchorman bit rather than a real mea culpa.

None of the sideshow has slowed anyone's prep. Nicky posted proof he's treating tonight like a job, printing and emailing a prep sheet that runs 20 pages long -- a level of over-preparation that's become part of the joke among the cast, since even a bit involving Google Doc brain teasers for his podcast got its own screen recording online this week.
