Syracuse Hires Cavaliers Exec Chris Presson As Deputy AD

TLDR: Syracuse is hiring Chris Presson, a Cleveland Cavaliers business-operations exec and former CFL team president, as Deputy AD and Chief Commercial Officer to run ticketing, partnerships and revenue.
College athletics is turning into a revenue business as fast as it's turning into a labor market, and Syracuse just went out and bought itself an exec who's run both an NBA business operation and a pro football front office. Pete Thamel reported the school is hiring Chris Presson as its new Deputy AD and Chief Commercial Officer, pulling him away from the Cleveland Cavaliers' business side to build out ticketing, premium seating and partnerships for the Orange.
Sources: Syracuse is hiring Chris Presson as the athletic department's new Deputy AD and Chief Commercial Officer. He comes from a job as the Senior VP of Business Operations with Rock Entertainment Group/Cleveland Cavilers. His hire is part of Syracuse rebuilding for the modern college landscape, as he'll lead commercial enterprise, including revenue generation, ticketing, premium opportunities and partnerships.
Presson's title on the way out is Senior VP of Business Operations for Rock Entertainment Group, the umbrella company that runs the Cavaliers, the G League's Cleveland Charge and the AHL's Cleveland Monsters. That's a real job at a real pro sports business, and it's the kind of hire schools are increasingly making instead of promoting from inside the athletic department. Before Cleveland, Presson was President and CEO of the CFL's Edmonton club, plus stops with the Phoenix Suns and Arizona's minor-league sports scene — a resume built entirely around selling tickets and sponsorships, not recruiting players.
Thamel's follow-up spells out just how much is landing on Presson's plate at Syracuse: marketing, fan engagement, content, digital, licensing and venue commercialization on top of the ticketing and partnerships work.
His job will also include marketing, fan engagement, content, digital, licensing and venue commercialization. He's a former President/CEO of the CFL’s Edmonton franchise.
That's essentially the entire commercial engine of an athletic department stacked under one new hire. It's also the second big swing Syracuse has made on the money side of the building this year — the school hired Kevin Morgan as its first-ever General Manager and Chief Revenue Officer back in early 2025, and new AD Bryan Blair, who took over in March, has been explicit about wanting a 'modern athletics enterprise' that competes for championships and dollars at the same time.
None of this is happening in a vacuum. Athletic departments nationally are scrambling to figure out how to fund revenue-sharing with athletes now that schools can pay players directly, and the programs moving fastest are the ones importing execs who've actually run a pro sports business rather than climbing up through college compliance offices. Presson fits that mold exactly — someone who's had to hit real sponsorship and ticketing numbers in Edmonton and Cleveland, not just administer a budget.
Syracuse football and basketball aren't hurting for attention, but the front office overhaul is the quieter story that determines whether the Orange can actually pay for the next decade of college sports. Presson's start date wasn't included in the reporting, but with Blair already stacking his business-side hires, don't be surprised if there's more to this rebuild before the calendar flips.
