Lightning rest Hedman, Cirelli and Guentzel at practice

TLDR: Tampa Bay held Victor Hedman, Anthony Cirelli and Jake Guentzel out of Wednesday's practice for maintenance, sent Dominic James to AHL Syracuse and said Yanni Gourde could return on the road trip.

Nobody got hurt. The Lightning just gave 3 of their most important players the day off, and everything else on the roster moved around them.

Jake Guentzel, Anthony Cirelli and Victor Hedman are absent from today’s #GoBolts practice at The Bench. They aren’t practicing for body maintenance, #TbLightning say.

The team called it body maintenance, and that's the word to hold onto. Hedman anchors the blue line, Cirelli is the shutdown center, and Guentzel has been a top-line scorer since he got to Tampa. A rest day for all 3 in early November is a coaching staff managing miles. It doesn't mean anyone is headed to IR. Thursday's game against Chicago is next, so whether all 3 dress is the first thing to watch.

Without them, practice looked strange. Crozier skated as the 12th forward just to fill out 4 lines, and the D pairings were reshuffled with Hedman gone.

#GoBolts 11/4 practice lines & pairings w/o Hedman, Cirelli, Guentzel; Crozier filling in as 12th forward: Gourde-Point-Kucherov Hagel-Geekie-Goncalves Mikheyev-Girgensons-Holmberg Viel-Sabourin-(Crozier) McDongh-Cernak Moser-Lilleberg D'Astous-Carlson

The name that jumps out of those lines is Gourde, skating left wing next to Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov. That matters. Gourde had hip surgery before the season, the Lightning said he'd be out until December, and he hasn't played a game yet. Last season he had 9 goals and 28 points in all 82 games and finished 10th in Selke voting. A healthy Gourde gives Jon Cooper back a middle-six forward who can kill penalties and finish checks.

The other move was sending Dominic James down to Syracuse. Right after the news broke, the Lightning beat wondered whether that meant Gourde was close or a call-up was on the way. A few hours later Cooper answered both.

#GoBolts’ Jon Cooper said that team wants to see Dominic James get more reps in AHL Syracuse & that will be best for his development. Also, Yanni Gourde could return on the upcoming road trip.

So this is about development, not a demotion. A young forward gets top minutes in the AHL instead of fighting for 4th-line shifts in Tampa, and it opens a roster spot for Gourde. According to Rotowire, Gourde is still out for Thursday against Chicago, but the 4-game road trip that follows, through Minnesota, Winnipeg, Buffalo and Columbus, is where he could finally debut.

If that happens, Gourde is back weeks ahead of the December timeline, the forwards get deeper right as the vets are getting rest days, and Cooper can spread the minutes out instead of riding his stars into the ground in November. Watch Thursday's lineup for Hedman, Cirelli and Guentzel, then watch the road trip for Gourde.
