The injury itself was brutal. Dell dislocated his knee on the play, tearing his ACL, MCL and LCL while also damaging his meniscus, an injury combination that required multiple surgeries to repair. He didn't play a single snap in 2025, and by his own account it was the first time he'd sat out from football since he was 5 years old.
Dell has been open about how hard the rehab process was, calling the past year the hardest of his life. But he's also talked about staying patient through it, saying the ordeal taught him to be humble and keep working rather than rush anything. That patience showed up in how Houston has handled his path back — the Texans kept him off PUP to open camp, which allowed him to ramp into full practice reps instead of a slower, staggered return.
The stakes here go beyond one receiver getting healthy. Dell's absence left a real hole in Houston's passing game last season, one the front office tried to patch through the draft and trades, but nothing fully replaced what he brings as a shifty, high-volume slot option who can win in ways the rest of that receiver room can't. If he's truly back to form, it changes the math on an offense that's been searching for its rhythm without him.
There's still a difference between suiting up in pads for a Wednesday practice in August and holding up over a full season, and the Texans aren't going to pretend otherwise. But every rep Dell logs from here through the start of the season is a real data point on whether he's actually back, not just cleared.
