Josh Heupel just made the call every Tennessee fan base has been debating all camp. Faizon Brandon, the top overall recruit in the 2026 class, has been named the Vols' starting quarterback, according to Pete Thamel and On3's Pete Nakos.

The move comes at the expense of George MacIntyre, the sophomore who'd been holding down the job and was widely expected to be Tennessee's guy entering the year. Instead, Brandon outlasted him through fall camp scrimmages, and per Thamel, it was Brandon's upside and dynamism as a playmaker that tipped the scales.
Brandon beat out veteran George MacIntyre for the starting spot in camp. His upside and dynamism loomed large in the decision making. He’s also a winner, as he went 35-1 in high school as a quarterback.
This isn't some unproven gamble, either. Brandon arrives with a résumé that reads like a cheat code: a 35-1 record as a starter at Grimsley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina, including a 31-game winning streak to close out his career and back-to-back state titles. He threw for over 6,300 yards and 79 touchdowns in high school while adding another 21 scores on the ground, and Tennessee beat out Alabama and everyone else to land the No. 1 overall prospect in the country.
Now comes the part that actually counts. Brandon will make his college debut on Sept. 5 against Furman, a manageable tune-up before the Vols hit the road for a Week 2 test at Georgia Tech, per Thamel's report.
Throwing a true freshman into the fire at SEC-adjacent competition right out of the gate is always a gamble, no matter how gaudy the recruiting profile. But Tennessee clearly believes Brandon's ceiling is worth the growing pains, and after 35 wins in 36 high school starts, Vols fans are getting exactly the kind of bet-on-talent decision they were hoping for.
