Grinders And Red Team Throw Down In Dozen Tournament 6 Play-In

The Dozen Tournament 6 Play-In rolls on with the 9-seed Grinders and 10-seed Red Team trading haymakers for a spot in the bracket.

Play-In trivia is the cruelest stretch of the Dozen calendar. You haven't made the tournament yet, you might not make the tournament at all, and one bad category can send you home before the real bracket even tips off. That's the spot the Grinders (BarstoolGruden, NjTank99, jakemalasek) and the Red Team (DanteTheDon, JackMac, ConnerHKnapp) walked into for Match 2 of the Tournament 6 Play-In — winner moves on, loser packs it up.

The seeding tells you everything about the stakes. 9 vs. 10 is the kind of line where the loser has zero margin and the winner buys themselves a real shot at making noise once the bracket gets seeded. Both rosters are stacked with vets who have done damage on the show before, which is exactly why this play-in slot felt like a real headliner instead of an appetizer.

Once the cameras rolled, the Grinders came out swinging. They doubled the first two categories — MLB (the Raul Mondesi Rookie of the Year clue) and Celebrity Mashup (Sofia Vergara plus Casey Affleck) — which, per The Dozen's own account, made them the first team ever to double the opening pair of categories. That is an absurd start, the trivia equivalent of going up 14-0 before the defense gets a snap.

The build-up wasn't quiet either. Jeff D. Lowe was out here rallying the Tiddes Hive with a full Theoden 'Ride now!' charge from Return of the King — the universal internet flare for 'we're going to war tonight.' That's the kind of energy you only see when Dozen heads truly think their squad has a chance to crash the tournament.

Where it goes from there is the whole reason Play-In matches exist. A historic start for the Grinders is great theater, but the Red Team has the kind of closing power that can flip a match in a single category. Either way, one of these crews is in Tournament 6 and the other is watching from home — and based on how loud the opening minutes were, this one is worth running back from the jump.
