McGuire's statement is worth sitting with because it wasn't a scramble move. He says the plan to roster 6 quarterbacks this season was in place since December, well before Castellanos ever entered the transfer portal. That's a program that likes to over-build at the position, and Castellanos, an experienced starter with legit rushing ability, is exactly the kind of arm you stash for depth rather than draft as a project.
The résumé backs that up. Castellanos threw for 6,449 yards and 48 touchdowns across 32 starts at Boston College, Florida State and UCF, and he set FSU's program records for rushing yards and rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a single season last year, including that 2025 opening upset over Alabama. He's not a name teams pick up for camp bodies.

Still, Brett McMurphy's framing matters as much as McGuire's quote does: Castellanos is competing for a backup role, full stop. Will Hammond, who's working back from a torn ACL suffered last October, remains the entrenched starter, and Tech also lost Brendan Sorsby this summer, which is really what opened the door for another veteran arm in the room alongside Tulsa transfer Kirk Francis.
For Castellanos, this is a landing spot after a messy offseason that reportedly included a temporary restraining order from a Kentucky judge as he pursued a path back to the field for a 5th season. Now he gets a Power 4 roster spot, a program that clearly wants him in the QB room regardless of depth chart, and a real shot to compete if Hammond's ACL recovery hits any snags.
Nobody's calling this a quarterback controversy. Tech has its guy in Hammond, and McGuire's comments read like a coach protecting his QB1 while stockpiling insurance behind him. But a room with Castellanos' athleticism and starting experience is the kind of depth that quietly changes how a season plays out if the worst happens.
