Daniel Adler Out As Twins Assistant GM

Another chunk of the old Twins front office is gone. Daniel Adler has spent almost a decade in Minnesota's baseball ops department, and he's out. Aaron Gleeman broke the news Thursday night, calling it a mutual split. The team isn't calling it a firing, and Adler is expected to look for work somewhere else.

Twins and assistant general manager Daniel Adler have mutually agreed to part ways, per a team source. Adler, who was hired by Derek Falvey in 2017 as director of baseball operations and promoted to assistant GM in 2019, is expected to pursue other opportunities.

Adler was a Falvey guy from day 1. Falvey hired him in 2017 as director of baseball operations and promoted him to assistant GM in 2019. That's the year the Bomba Squad Twins won 101 games. Adler was in the room for the big calls in that era, and he was still there in 2023 when Minnesota finally ended its playoff drought. He wasn't a name casual fans knew, but he was one of the people advising the top of the org on what moves they could make and which ones they should make.

The bigger picture is the problem here. The Twins and Falvey mutually parted ways on January 30 after 9 years, and GM Jeremy Zoll moved up from No. 2 to running the whole baseball operation. At 35, Zoll is the youngest head of baseball operations in MLB. Falvey has since landed in the Mets' front office. So the guy who built this department left 8 months ago, and now 1 of his top lieutenants is leaving too. That's what it looks like when a new boss starts making the department his own, whether or not anyone says so.

Here's what's left. Gleeman followed up with the depth chart: 3 assistant GMs still work under Zoll, and nobody knows yet if Adler's spot gets filled.

Alex Hassan, Sean Johnson and Josh Kalk are still in place, so this isn't a gutting. Still, the Twins not committing to a replacement tells you something. Either Zoll wants a smaller group at the top, or he's waiting to see who's out there once other teams start reshuffling their front offices this offseason. Both are fair. Neither makes it look like Minnesota plans a quiet winter.

For Adler, the timing is fine. He's leaving just as front-office hiring picks up, and Sports Illustrated's Twins site has already mentioned the Mets, where Falvey now works, as a possible landing spot. It also floated him as a GM candidate elsewhere. For the Twins, this is 1 more question going into a big offseason with a young boss, a slimmer front office and not much of the old Falvey leadership left. Zoll doesn't have Falvey above him anymore, and now he doesn't have Adler next to him either. Whatever happens with this roster this winter, it's Zoll's call.
