Nobody expected star power out of Soldier Field on Saturday. The Bears sat every offensive starter for their preseason opener against the Browns, handing the keys to Tyson Bagent, the undrafted Division II record-holder who's spent 3 seasons clawing for snaps behind Caleb Williams. For a while it looked ugly. Cleveland jumped out front, and Bagent looked every bit like a guy who hadn't thrown a real pass since mop-up duty last year.
Then the defense bailed him out. A strip-sack on Deshaun Watson flipped field position, and Bagent made the Browns pay, hitting Maurice Alexander on a 25-yard touchdown to get Chicago on the board. It was the kind of flash that gets a backup quarterback trending on a Saturday afternoon in August.
The touchdown that woke up Soldier Field, with Bagent and his receiver celebrating in the end zone as the Bears got on the board against Cleveland.
"Preseason Bagent" has become a bit of a running joke around Chicago at this point. This is a guy who set the NCAA all-divisions record for career touchdown passes at Shepherd, won his first career NFL start back in 2023, and got rewarded this offseason with a 2-year, $10 million extension that can max out at $16 million. He's never been the guy the Bears are building around, but he's proven, repeatedly, that he can make a defense pay when they sleep on him.
The touchdown wasn't the whole story, though. Bagent also threw an interception when he locked onto a receiver a beat too long, and the Bears needed a 50-yard field goal from Cairo Santos as the half expired just to draw level. It's preseason — sloppy is the point — but scouts and coaches don't stop grading just because the stakes are fake.
Across the field, the Browns' own quarterback room was drawing just as much attention. With Watson getting knocked around and Cleveland still sorting out its QB pecking order, fans were more fixated on the names throwing to the Browns' skill players than who was under center.
That scrutiny extended to the pass-catchers, too. Browns fans were buzzing about the combination of KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston lining up together, a pairing one Cleveland-focused account called a duo the franchise hasn't had in years for speed and size on the outside.
I will look past the #Browns' QB situation and just note the fact I don't know when they've had two guys like KC Concepcion & Denzel Boston together. Both already showing their compliment of speed & size. LOVE IT.
None of it changes what these games actually are: evaluation tape. For the Bears, that means finding out whether Bagent still has enough juice to be a viable QB2 behind Williams, and whether backups like Alexander deserve a real look come cutdown day. A touchdown pass in a preseason opener won't move Bagent up the depth chart, but it's exactly the kind of moment that keeps a career backup employed for another year.
