UNC's Belichick era hits its first real mess

It's been a rough week for the Bill Belichick experiment in Chapel Hill. UNC put general manager Mike Lombardi on paid administrative leave, and within hours it was clear this wasn't just a minor front-office shakeup.

Lombardi isn't some random hire. He's a longtime NFL exec who worked with Belichick in Cleveland and New England, and when Belichick took the UNC job in December 2024, Lombardi came with him to help build the front office. He became, by most accounts, the highest-paid GM in college football at around $1.5 million a year. That's the guy now sitting at home while the school investigates.

Pete Nakos reported that the call to put Lombardi on leave came from UNC administration itself, not from Belichick, which is a notable detail. It suggests this wasn't a coach cleaning house or a mutual decision within the football staff, but the university stepping in over Belichick's head on a personnel matter involving his own guy.

The timing makes it messier. This is dropping right as UNC opens camp and heads into Belichick's second season, and it's tangled up with reports that the program is also drawing interest from the College Sports Commission, the body that polices revenue-sharing caps and NIL deals. It's not clear the two are connected, but having your GM on leave and your program on the CSC's radar in the same week is not the offseason story UNC wanted.

Naturally the drama made its way onto the biggest stage in the sport this week — Thamel brought it up on the College GameDay Pod amid Big Ten media days chatter, a sign this is now a topic every coach and reporter in the building is getting asked about, not just a local Chapel Hill story.
