Vita Vea wants out of Tampa and the clock is ticking

Monday night got weird for the Buccaneers in a hurry. Adam Schefter dropped the news that Vita Vea, Tampa's two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle, had formally requested a trade after the two sides couldn't find common ground on a contract extension.

Within minutes it was everywhere. Jordan Schultz and SleeperNFL (citing Mike Garafolo) both confirmed the same thing — Vea has wanted a new deal for a while now, and the Bucs simply haven't found a number that gets it done.

This isn't a shock if you've been paying attention. Vea, the 12th overall pick back in 2018, is in the final year of a 4-year, $71 million deal that pays him $17 million this season with zero guaranteed money, according to ESPN. He's a 2-time Pro Bowler with 35 sacks over 8 seasons who held in at mandatory minicamp this offseason over the exact same money dispute. He wants something in the range of $25 million a year, and Tampa hasn't gotten there.

It's not just Vea, either. Schultz pointed out that his situation is a domino piece in a much bigger Tampa Bay contract picture — Baker Mayfield is also in the final year of his deal and looking for an extension of his own.

Then Tuesday brought a fresh wrinkle. Todd Bowles told reporters that Vea "tweaked something" and isn't practicing, per Schefter — conveniently arriving right as the trade-request drama is peaking. Whether that's a real injury or a very well-timed absence, it doesn't exactly help either side move toward a resolution.

If Tampa does decide to move on, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler already floated 5 landing spots worth watching — the Raiders, Patriots, Chargers, Panthers and 49ers. All of them could use an interior force who still gets after the quarterback and stuffs the run at 31 years old. The Bucs are under no obligation to trade him, but with Vea not practicing and no extension in sight, this is exactly the kind of standoff that either gets resolved with a check or ends with a jersey swap before Week 1.
