This has been simmering for a while. Vea sat out as a hold-in during mandatory minicamp last month over this exact issue, and Todd Bowles tried to wave it off as routine business. Turns out it wasn't routine at all — it was a 31-year-old two-time Pro Bowler entering the final year of his deal, staring down $17 million with zero guaranteed money, and deciding he's not playing out a walk year on those terms.
The résumé backs up the leverage play. Vea was the 12th overall pick back in 2018, and across 8 seasons he's racked up 35 sacks while anchoring the middle of a defense that's needed him healthy and disruptive every fall. He made Pro Bowls in 2021 and 2024, and last season alone he logged 4.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hits and 34 tackles across all 17 games. That's not a guy fading out — that's a guy who thinks he's still worth paying like a top interior lineman, and Tampa apparently disagreed enough to stall the talks.

The Bucs now have a real decision to make. Trading a Pro Bowl run-stuffer heading into a season where they still have playoff aspirations is a gut punch to the defense, but paying him top dollar on a contract he's already shown he wants restructured — or eating a disgruntled, unguaranteed final year — isn't a great alternative either. Front offices hate distractions like this heading into camp, and this one landed right as teams are trying to lock in their rosters.
Watch what Tampa does next more than what Vea says publicly. Trade requests don't guarantee trades — plenty of players have asked out and stayed put when the return wasn't there — but with Vea's camp making this public through Schefter and Garafolo, the pressure is squarely on the Bucs to either extend him, ship him, or manage a very awkward locker room situation through training camp.
