The days of a beer-league accountant or a Zamboni driver getting a surprise NHL call-up are officially over. The Wild made it official on Tuesday, and the move is the first real look at a league-wide overhaul nobody outside the hockey world was talking about.

Thome isn't some random guy plucked off a beer-league roster. According to the Wild's own release, the 29-year-old played four seasons at North Dakota, went 19-14-4 with a 2.24 goals-against average, and has spent the last few years working hockey ops and video coaching jobs for the Chicago Steel and the Coachella Valley Firebirds. He's now dual-tasked as a Hockey Operations Analyst and the club's designated EBUG, which is a very different résumé than the old-school volunteer version of this job.
The number is the tell that this isn't just a Wild quirk. Chris Johnston flagged the sweater detail straight from the team release, and it's not a Minnesota thing at all.

Johnston followed up with the bigger picture, and it's a real structural change buried in the new CBA. Every team now has to designate a permanent emergency backup who travels with the club for every game, home and road, all wearing No. 00, and none of them can have NHL experience or more than 80 professional games under their belt.

That last part is what actually kills the folklore. The old EBUG system produced legends because it was random — a fan in the crowd, a local rink rat, someone who worked a day job and got the call of a lifetime because two goalies went down in the same period. This new rule swaps that lottery-ticket chaos for a standing, professionally vetted roster spot on every team, which is more reliable for the league and a lot less fun for everyone who loved the old chaos.
Thome's deal is really the test case for how this plays out across all 32 teams this season. Watch for who else gets named to these full-time EBUG jobs, and whether any of them actually get the call — because under this new system, the next viral goalie moment is coming from a guy who already had the gig lined up, not a walk-on with a day job.
