Akron (1-4, 0-2 MAC) travels to Miami (OH) (3-3, 1-1 MAC) with both teams thin at quarterback: Miami is on its 3rd starter, Fort Hays State transfer Caleb Heavner, and Akron has been without C. Broughton since early October. The RedHawks play close games almost every week and just survived UMass by a point, while the Zips have lost 4 straight, the last a 2-point near-miss against Eastern Michigan. No line has posted yet.

Akron Zips
  • Played Eastern Michigan to a 2-point finish
  • Miami offense has scored 24 or fewer 3 straight
  • Starting QB Broughton out with knee injury
  • Allowed 38 or more points 3 times
  • Lost 4 straight, 0-2 in MAC
Miami (OH) RedHawks
  • Heavner has 2 starts and a road win
  • At home, where Miami beat UConn and Holy Cross
  • Defense stopped UMass 2-point try to win

Start with the quarterbacks, because that's where both teams are hurting. Miami has lost D. McComb and T. Gotkowski for the season, which put the offense in the hands of Caleb Heavner, a transfer from Fort Hays State. His first career start for the RedHawks came against Bowling Green, where he went 17-of-24 for 198 yards and a touchdown in a 24-20 loss. Akron's QB room is thinner still: C. Broughton has been listed out with a knee injury since the Central Michigan game, and the Zips have scored 10, 17 and 23 points in the 3 games since September ended.

Heavner got his first win at UMass, and it nearly got away. Miami led 20-13 late, and the Minutemen drove 91 yards for a touchdown in the final 2:22 before the RedHawks stopped the 2-point try to win 20-19. That's 3 straight games where Miami has scored 24 or fewer, and it's going to be without receiver D. Hyatt for an undetermined stretch. They'll also be missing WR K. Reynolds and TE E. Karner, both done for the season. With Hyatt joining that list, Heavner's target pool is short. No line has posted yet, so the board doesn't have an opinion on this one either.

Akron is hard to get excited about. The only win came at home against Robert Morris, 45-10. Since then it's been losses of 34 to Minnesota, 28 to UNLV and 24 to Central Michigan. The Eastern Michigan game is the exception and the best sign of life the Zips have shown: a 25-23 homecoming loss to an Eagles team that came in unbeaten in the MAC. Akron is 1-4 and 0-2 in conference play, so it needs a result here or the year starts to slip away.

Miami's season has been a lot of close games. Apart from the 45-7 win over Holy Cross, every RedHawks game in the last 5 has been decided by 4 points or fewer, including a 31-35 loss at Cincinnati, a 24-21 win over UConn and the 1-point escape in Amherst. That's a team that doesn't put opponents away but also doesn't get blown out, and that's a different profile from an Akron team that has given up 38 or more 3 times.

The early forecast for Oxford is around 40 degrees and cloudy, with wind near 15 mph. A week out, that's a guess, not a lock, but cold air and a steady wind won't help 2 offenses that are already short on quarterbacks and receivers. Miami is at home and has the better record, plus a quarterback who has now started and won. Akron has shown it can hang for 4 quarters, at least for 1 week. Whoever handles the ball better and makes fewer mistakes in the passing game should win.
