Akron already has two road trips under its belt by the time it hits TCF Bank Stadium. Minnesota's counting on that being an easy afternoon.

Minnesota's the far more proven program here — a returning record-setting freshman quarterback against a MAC team replacing nearly half its roster is about as clean a talent gap as you'll find in September. Akron's upset equity lives almost entirely in Gant and Williams making a few explosive plays, but asking a rebuilt defense to also hold up on the road tips this heavily toward the home side.

Akron
  • Gant and Williams both back as all-league caliber playmakers
  • 2025 was Akron's most wins since 2017
  • Moorhead's system has produced explosive offenses before
  • Replacing roughly 40 of 85 scholarship players
  • Finished 5-7 last season, well below Big Ten level
  • Coach himself calls team "discovery mode" this fall
Minnesota
  • Drake Lindsey set program freshman-QB wins record in 2025
  • Program has hit 8-9 wins in four of last five seasons
  • Lindsey has multiple game-winning drives already on résumé
  • Darius Taylor's hamstring issues limited him repeatedly in 2025
  • Backup RB A.J. Turner already lost for a season once
  • SP+ pegs Minnesota just 45th nationally, mid-pack Big Ten

This one's about roster continuity as much as talent. Minnesota returns a Big Ten team that's finished 8 or 9 wins in four of the last five years, and now hands the keys back to Drake Lindsey, who set a program record for wins by a freshman quarterback in 2025. Akron, on the other hand, is replacing roughly 40 of its 85 scholarship players under second-year coach Joe Moorhead, who called his own team's spring "a discovery mode" heading into the fall.

Lindsey's numbers back up the hype: 249-of-386 for 2,382 yards, 18 touchdowns against just 6 picks, plus a game-winning overtime run to beat Michigan State and an OT touchdown pass to close out the Rate Bowl. If he takes even a modest step forward, Minnesota's floor gets a lot higher than the middling SP+ ranking suggests. Akron's counterpunch is its skill talent — running back Jordan Gant and wideout Marcel Williams are both back and both considered all-league caliber, giving the Zips a puncher's chance even with a defense that's largely unproven.

The number crunchers aren't buying a shootout so much as a mismatch, and the market reflects that gap between a steady Big Ten program and a MAC team that finished 5-7 a year ago. Still, Akron's most-wins-since-2017 season showed a team capable of grinding out ugly, low-event finishes, which matters if Minnesota's offensive line hits any early hiccups.

Where this could get interesting is health. Darius Taylor missed chunks of 2025 with hamstring trouble, and backup A.J. Turner was lost for the year — that's the kind of running-back attrition that forced Minnesota into more of a pass-heavy identity than Fleck usually wants. If Taylor isn't fully right by mid-September, Lindsey and that passing game will be asked to carry an even bigger load against a defense that's still figuring out who it is.

For Akron, the calculus is about execution over talent gap. Moorhead's system has produced explosive offenses at previous stops, and if Gant and Williams get going early, the Zips can hang around and make Minnesota work for four quarters. But a defense replacing nearly half its scholarship roster on the road at a Big Ten venue is a tall order against a quarterback who already has signature wins on his résumé.

Bottom line: this is a measuring-stick game for Minnesota's ceiling and a proving-ground game for Akron's rebuilt roster. The Gophers have the far better quarterback and the deeper history of winning close ones; the Zips have two skill players who can make it uncomfortable if given the chance.
