Alabama still doesn't have a starting quarterback locked in, and that's the story heading into Lexington. Kalen DeBoer is choosing between redshirt junior Austin Mack and sophomore Keelon Russell, and neither has more than about 70 career snaps. On the other side, Will Stein inherits a Kentucky team he's rebuilding from scratch, with Notre Dame transfer Kenny Minchey trying to run a brand-new scheme against SEC competition in just his second game as a Wildcat.
Stein was Oregon's offensive coordinator before Kentucky hired him in December, and he didn't waste time reshaping the roster. Nearly 30 transfers came through the door, including running backs CJ Baxter and Javontae Barnes, in an attempt to fix an offense that finished 105th nationally in 2025 and averaged just 23 points a game. Alabama, meanwhile, is bringing in a top-2 recruiting class and added talent at multiple spots through the portal, giving DeBoer more sheer firepower even with an unsettled QB room.

History says this one shouldn't be close. Alabama has won 8 straight in this series and leads it 39-2-1 all time, including a 49-21 win the last time these two met. DeBoer's own 2025 ended rough, a Rose Bowl blowout loss to Indiana and an SEC Championship beatdown from Georgia, but this is still Year 3 of his rebuild against a Kentucky program starting completely over.

Kentucky's beat writers are already flagging the Wildcats as a team to bet under their season win total, and it's not hard to see why on this Saturday specifically. The name on the schedule says Alabama, the history says Alabama, and nothing in Lexington's offseason changes that calculus yet.
