This is the first Alabama-LSU meeting since Kiffin left Ole Miss for the richest coaching contract in college football history, and since Brian Kelly's LSU tenure ended in a midseason firing last October. The Tigers finished 2025 at 8-4 under interim coach Frank Wilson, capping the year with a Texas Bowl win, before LSU went out and bought the No. 1-ranked transfer class in the country to build Kiffin's roster. Alabama, meanwhile, is coming off an 11-4 season that ended with a Rose Bowl blowout loss to Indiana in the CFP quarterfinals, but the program answered by locking Kalen DeBoer up through 2032 rather than letting any Michigan speculation linger.
The quarterback pictures on both sidelines are still very much in flux this far out. Alabama's job is a real competition between Austin Mack, the DeBoer import from Washington who saw spot duty last season, and Keelon Russell, the highest-rated recruit the program has ever signed, with DeBoer signaling the battle could run deep into fall camp. LSU handed its keys to Arizona State transfer Sam Leavitt, who missed spring reps recovering from a Lisfranc injury but is expected to be fully healthy and installed as QB1 well before the Tigers host Alabama on Friday, November 6.
