Two programs mid-overhaul collide when App State makes the short trip to Greenville — a game that'll tell us a lot about which rebuild is actually ahead of schedule.

East Carolina brings the better recent track record into this one — a 9-4 season and a bowl win carry weight, and Blake Harrell staying put while several AAC rivals lost their coaches is a real edge. App State's talent influx is legitimate, but banking on a brand-new roster to go on the road and beat a team that just won 9 games is a lot to ask this early. Lean Pirates to get the win at home.

App State
  • Highest-rated signing class in App State history
  • Singleton, a former 4-star dual-threat, has the edge
  • Back-to-back losing seasons under previous staff
  • 66 newcomers means unknown chemistry this early
East Carolina
  • 9-4 in 2025, capped by a Military Bowl win
  • Kept HC Harrell as rivals lost their coaches
  • Must replace the entire starting offensive line
  • Only 7 returning starters, new OC and DC both

Neither team has a settled starting quarterback yet, and that's the whole story of this one. App State's Malachi Singleton, a Purdue transfer by way of Arkansas, took first-team reps all spring and looks like the favorite over Henry Hasselbeck, son of longtime NFL Pro Bowler Matt Hasselbeck, but head coach Dowell Loggains hasn't made it official. It's year 2 in Boone for Loggains after back-to-back losing seasons, and he responded this offseason by all but rebuilding the roster from scratch — 66 newcomers, 35 of them portal transfers, headlined by the highest-rated signing class in program history.

East Carolina's got its own quarterback soap opera. Mitch Griffis, a well-traveled Texas Tech transfer with Wake Forest roots, and Emory Williams, a Miami transfer who backed up Cam Ward and Carson Beck, are still battling into fall camp, with Blake Harrell not expected to name a starter until August. Harrell was one of the few coaches in the American to keep his job after a 9-4 season and a Military Bowl win over Pitt, but he had to replace both coordinators — new OC Jordan Davis ran the nation's top-scoring offense at North Texas last year, while Jordon Hankins steps in at defensive coordinator after two seasons at Memphis.

This is East Carolina's home opener, but it comes after a trip to Alabama the week before, so there's a real question of what the Pirates look like once they're back on Sun Belt-and-AAC-caliber turf. App State, meanwhile, opens against Maine before making this trip — an easier tune-up than what ECU's about to walk through. Both programs are selling patience to their fan bases this fall, and this is the first real measuring stick for either.

Watch the trenches here. East Carolina has to replace its entire starting offensive line, and only 7 starters return from that bowl team overall — this is a group leaning hard on 22 portal newcomers to hold up early. The skill talent behind it isn't bad: Brock Spalding is back after topping 500 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns in 2025, and the backfield gets a jolt from Michael Allen and Ashton Gray, portal adds who each ran for nearly 400 yards and 4-plus scores at their old schools. App State counters with its own portal infusion at defensive back and along both lines, part of Loggains' plan to buy time up front while the skill positions catch up.

Records aside, this reads like two teams still figuring out who they are. App State wants proof its rebuild has a floor higher than the last 2 years suggested; East Carolina wants to show last season's breakthrough wasn't a one-off now that half its staff and its entire offensive line are gone. Whichever quarterback room settles in fastest probably wins Saturday, September 12.
